3-D patchwork is the whimsey of folding cloth
to create fun quilts. Working in either flannel or cotton, each student will learn the
fold and sew techniques for box ties, on point center square, flying geese, Ohio stars,
pinwheels, and more. They are presented as technique, and as a part of a 3-D Sampler quilt.
Eight blocks are taught in class, showing the major folds.
This is an
all-day workshop.
Select quality fabrics which are 42" - 44" wide. You'll want
between 2 and 6 yards of a neutral background, depending on the finished size of quilt you may eventually desire.
Tone on tone muslins and whites are poor choices because it's difficult to determine the
'right' side, as well as there are so many interesting fabrics that make fabulous backgrounds.
As far as your colors are concerned, this is a sampler, so just
about 'anything goes'. As a guideline, you might choose 3-4 different colors (red, blue, green, gold?) and
within each color family select at least 3-4 different values (medium, med. dark, and dark)
Of each bring 1/4 - 1/3 yard. More is better.
Before class, cut the following from background
ACCURATELY across the 42" width:
(1) 6-1/2" strip subcut into:
(4) 6-1/2" squares
(4) 6-1/2" x 3-1/2"
(2) 4-1/2" strips subcut into:
(14) 4-1/2" squares
(4) 4-1/2" x 2-1/2"
(3) 3-1/2" strips subcut into:
(32) 3-1/2" squares
(4-5) 2-1/2" strips subcut into:
(28) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"
(16) 2-1/2" squares
Bring the
remainder of your fabric to class. You may be speedy
and need more, or you could discover a cutting error
and need more.
