Wright's Single Tree of Life Workshop, Taught by Jackie Robinson

HOME • Wright's Single Tree of Life

Based on art glass designed by Mr. Wright, patchwork for quilting can be very exciting. Explore the use of strata sets and diagonal cuts to create this design which is full of new techniques from the Darwin D Martin House in Buffalo, NY.

This is an all-day workshop.

Use quality fabrics which are 42" - 44" wide. Select six fabrics for the 'tree', plus a background AND black for the leading.

The six fabrics seem to work best if they are solids or very close to solids. They may be six values of a single color or three values each of two colors. Or, they can run a partial rainbow, ranging through the spectrum. The main thing is that they are 6 colors you like, and they should not be 'washed out'.

Lame' is a wonderful addition to this quilt. If you choose to use lame' put it in one of the 1/8 yard slots. Only TISSUE lame' works well. You'll need to have it bonded with WOVEN fusible interfacing. Tricot lame' is not good for this project. It's extremely heat sensitive, and we'll be pressing.

Of these six fabrics, bring 1/4 yard of three of the colors and 1/8 yard of the remaining three. Also bring 1 yard of background (next paragraph) and 1-1/8 yards of black solid (nothing else works as well).

About the background fabric. It should be a very pale pastel or other light neutral. I doubt that you want muslin, but a light beige about that value would be good or a very pale grey. Parchment and Shell from Springs work well. Bring 1 yard of this background solid. Very pale pastels - - very pale. White is usually too white, therefore not a good choice.

Before class, cut about 24 strips of the black accurately - 3/4" x 42" (across the fabric width - selvage to selvage). Bring them with you, as well as the remainder of the black.

Also Bring to class:
Sewing Machine with GOOD 1/4" foot - (machines provided at Chicago Quilt Festival)
Quilts in the Tradition of Frank Lloyd Wright book (very helpful) - available at class
          Rotary cutter
          Rotary cutting mat
Rotary cutting ruler - needs a 60 degree line on it
          Scissors
          Dark thread
          Pins
          Purple Thang (available at class)
          Cushion to sit on
          Small trash bag .
