Molly Martin is an athlete, honor student, and volunteer, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes since the age of 2.
During high school, Molly’s OneTouch® Ping® really helped her to not feel any different from her peers. She was even able to wear OneTouch® Ping® under her prom dress and she never had to interrupt the fun of Prom Night to remove her pump and deliver insulin. Now at the age of 18, Molly is just beginning college and enrolled in a Veterinary Technology program with aspirations of one day becoming a veterinarian. She feels confident that her pump will continue to help her stay in control of her diabetes during this new and exciting time of her life.
But Molly isn’t your typical teenage girl. Following in her father’s and brother’s footsteps, Molly has been racing motocross competitively since 2009. Despite diabetes, Molly was able to excel in the women’s circuit and within a year, she placed first overall in the Women’s Motocross Race Series. "I love riding motocross. When I get out there, it's just me and the bike. I feel free when I ride, like I don't have to think about diabetes,” Molly says.
Molly is able to continue pumping while practicing and competing. She simply tucks the pump under her race gear and utilizes the meter-remote to deliver insulin as needed.
However, Molly’s ambition does not stop there. Molly has been active in 4-H for many years and is recognized as a Gold Star Award winner, and for her countless afternoons spent working on special projects, where she focuses on programs related to food, nutrition, and healthy eating, specifically for people living with diabetes.
“I have learned how to manage this lifelong disease by taking care of myself and being responsible, especially about nutrition. Without diabetes, I don't think I would be the person I am today,” Molly says.
In addition to her busy schedule, Molly also manages to find time to serve as a patient advocate at her local hospital, works for her local veterinary hospital, and is an active member of both Children With Diabetes and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
She continues to enjoy motocross and spreading positive messages to other children and families affected by diabetes.
